los angeles, california 2024
rokusho is a strong, masculine dining space that presents an honest sense of permanence imbued with raw simplicity.
it was important for us to preserve the structural and textural details that historically existed and expand upon the foundation by incorporating sustainable materials such as patina'd cork, japanese washi, yakisugi, and steel. we added purposeful moments of negative space to naturally highlight sculptural botanical pieces and washi artworks, while intentionally keeping some of the uneven walls and carefully adding layers of plaster to create movement and texture, allowing the whole space to act as a surface of art.
we invite guests to experience an atmosphere that not only celebrates these elements but also fosters a sense of grounding when entering, and to embrace the comfort and allure of darkness and shadows – a departure from the typical aesthetic found in restaurants in los angeles.
